Ask The Swag Gal: March 10, 2010
It’s Wednesday, so it is time for another installment of ‘Ask The Swag Gal’! Every week I pick one reader to give my prized advice to. Remember, if you send your question to email@example.com and I pick your question, you win 150 Swag Bucks! So be sure to send me your question today. Today’s question is all about staying healthy- something that I work on every day. So let’s get to it, shall we?
Dear Swag Gal,
I have made the decision that 2010 will be my year to get healthy and slim. Hopefully. Since the beginning of January I have lost 15lbs. It is definitely not an easy process and you really need to have the motivation to keep at it. My husband is even taking part in the “get healthy” process. Which makes it much easier to have that support with you. I walk 4 days a week, 5 if I can. Watch my portion control and have started to eat healthier. I am wondering if you have any suggestions on what I could do for exercise on those days when it is too cold out to go for a walk, or on days like today when there is a huge snow storm. Or maybe you can just reassure me that taking a break once or twice a week is just okay.
Determined and Motivated
Dear Determined and Motivated,
First of all CONGRATULATIONS on your lost 15 pounds! That is just incredible! I know how difficult it can be to change your lifestyle, and it only gets harder as the thrill of starting something new wears off and the bad habits you are trying to get rid of rear their ugly head.
I am also thrilled that you have decided that it is about time to get healthy. It sounds like you are doing it right by working out, watching your portion control and eating healthier. These are things I try to do every day. I also make sure to drink plenty of water because it helps me stay hydrated and it gives me the sensation of being full in between meals.
You asked for specific exercises you can do while staying at home, and I have some good ideas for you.
First of all, get yourself an At-home fitness kit. (To earn Swag Bucks on this product, click here and search for the item on the store’s homepage.) This kit is wonderful to have at home for those times you can’t exercise outside or get to a gym. Once you have the resistance bands you can use this website to help you get started. I think it is extremely important to incorporate resistance training with cardio because muscle uses more calories than fat, so if your muscles are strong, your metabolism will speed up and you will loose the weight faster. Don’t worry about looking like a crazed muscle woman- weight lifters have very strict workouts and are doing much more than using an exercise band to get that crazy definition.
Another thing you can do at home is Yoga. Yoga can help you stretch your muscles and create strength and flexibility. If you are working out 4-5 times a week, one of those days can be filled by taking a yoga class, or searching the web for yoga exercises to do at home. (For those of you reading this post, I have the heads up on a special prize we will be offering tomorrow and it has to do with yoga, so keep checking back to the Swag Bucks blog to see what the deal is.) Another great thing about yoga is kids love to do it with you- so it is fun for the whole family!
As for taking off a day or two, that is perfectly fine. Just make sure to keep it to only one or two days off, and if you find the days starting to add up, just get yourself back onto an exercise routine. Also, try to keep your calories down on the days you don’t exercise, especially if you are trying to loose weight. For some reason I find the days I don’t exercise are the days I want to eat a burger and fries at a fast-food restaurant, so I work very hard at making sure I eat clean on the days I don’t exercise.
So there you have it. On days you have to exercise at home try strength training with bands and yoga, and on your days off be sure to keep your food healthy and light. I am sure you dear readers have more tips for Determined and Motivated. So please post your ideas in the comments, and the best tip will win 150 Swag Bucks!
