Give A Hoot
I was browsing through one of my favorite websites earlier, Good.is, and I came across a very interesting article. Apparently there is a new Facebook app to help students study. Now normally, Facebook and studying do not go hand-in-hand. In fact, Facebook can be one of the biggest distractions when it comes to getting things done. However, this new app, Hoot.Me, “—named for all those studying night owls—promises to make Facebook a distraction-free place to get help with homework and work on projects.”
How does it work? Well, once you log into the app, you’re able to see what other users from your school are working on. If everyone on your campus or from your school is asleep, you have the option of searching for active study groups happening at other schools. Upon joining a study session, you can get help through video conferencing “or use what Hoot calls “smart chat”, which automatically reformats typed science formulas and math equations so that they look the way they should.” There’s even a history feature that allows you to review information from past sessions. This app is great for teachers, too! Use it to host virtual office hours where you can offer small, private study groups for a few students.
The hope is that this app can help change Facebook from a hindrance to a study aid. Check it out!
