Ask The Swag Gal – January 5, 2011

Posted by on Wed, January 5th, 2011 at 7:00 am

This week’s Ask TSGal comes from a fellow Swaggernaut looking for fun, cheap activites for her kids. She says:
Dear Swag Gal:

I am a very devoted and blessed Christian wife of 1 and mom of 3. We homeschool and live off of 1 income, so we are always looking for awesome ways to break up the routine and add in some extra fun for the kids. Historically, I haven’t been real good at picking up inexpensive but fun items for the kids, beyond books and dvds. Do you have any suggestions for me?
Well, three kids can certainly be hard to keep entertained, for any income family. Books and DVDs always work, but you definitely want to spice it up a bit! If you live in a place where snow is accessible, take them sleigh riding! This activity is completely free, and enjoyable for the whole family! Don’t have a sled? No problem! Use the lid from your garbage can, and fly down the hill!
Lucky enough to live in a place where you can step outside without getting frostbite? How about setting up your own Drive-in movie! Bring your TV outside, bring some blankets, pillows, and popcorn, and put a cool, new spin on movie night!
Something fun I always counted on during my childhood was sidewalk chalk. Pick up a bucket, and let your kids’ imaginations run wild as they decorate the driveway with their very own art. My favorite thing to do with sidewalk chalk was to design a collection of roads spread across the driveway. I would make stop lights, stop signs, and little stores on the sides. Get out their bikes and watch as they enjoy their driveway highway!
How about a scavenger hunt? Make up about 20 cards, and hide them all around the house. Each card should have a clue as to where the next card might be. This is a fun activity that can involve all of the kids, and encourage them to work together! Don’t forget to put a fun little gift at the end of the hunt. Perhaps a delicious chocolate bar!
Don’t be afraid to resort back to those classic activities, such as sock puppets! Grab those old socks at the bottom of your drawer that are missing their other half, and have the kids decorate them with markers, buttons, felt, etc. When they’re done constructing their puppets, have them put on a puppet show for you!
Kids typically love to cook – so how about making a delicious treat that doesn’t involve any ovens or anything electrical! Make your own popsicles! Take paper cups and fill them three quarters of the way with fruit juice. Stick a popsicle stick in them, and throw ‘em in the freezer. Fun to make, even more fun to eat!
If your kids are old enough, encourage them to volunteer! This is a completely free, and extremely rewarding activity. Serve at the soup kitchen, help out at the local animal shelter, work as a candy striper at the hospital, etc. Help others and feel good about yourself!
You might also want to check out the Hot Deals section of the Swag Store to find some great, not only inexpensive, but FREE items that the kids will love. Your little boy can occupy himself as he puts on his own rendition of Cowboys vs. Indians with the Classic Cowboy & Indian Toys available for only 199SB. Keep your daughter entertained with the Old MacDonald’s sing-A-Long Coloring Book for 299SB, as they color and sing, all the while learning new skills.
I hope some of these ideas sparked your interest, and better yet, your kids’ interests. Keep working hard, as I’m sure your children appreciate everything you do for them! Feel free to follow up with new activities you introduced to your kids. Include some photos or videos that we can share in a future blog post, and we might even gift you a Swag Buck bonus!
