Happy Cherry Pie Day

Today is a very special day – it’s Cherry Pie Day!  According to HolidayInsights.com, “cherry pie is America’s second most popular pie, behind only apple pie in popularity.  As a young boy, George Washington made the Cherry tree popular, with his famous quote ‘I can not tell a lie, I chopped down the Cherry tree.’  We celebrate George Washington’s Birthday and President’s Day in February.  Appropriately, its traditional to bake cherry pies in honor of the occasion.”  Today, I encourage you to honor this tradition by treating yourself to a delicious piece of cherry pie.  And if you’re feeling really festive, check out this recipe for Cherry Pie from AllRecipes.com and celebrate Cherry Pie Day with the whole family!

  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 1/4 cup ice water
  • 2 (16 ounce) cans tart cherries
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 3 tablespoons quick-cooking tapioca
  • 1/4 teaspoon almond extract
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • red food coloring
  • 1 tablespoon butter or margarine


  1. In a bowl, combine flour and salt; cut in shortening until crumbly. Gradually add water. Tossing with a fork until dough forms a ball. Divide dough in half. Roll out one half to fit a 9-in. pie plate for bottom crust. Drain cherries, reserving 1/4 cup juice. Mix cherries, juice, sugar, tapioca, extract, salt and food coloring if desired; pour into the crust. Dot with butter . Top with a lattice crust. Bake at 375 degrees F for 55-60 minutes.
