Music Monday – Paperback Writer
Exactly 46 years ago today, The Beatles started a two week run at number 1 on the US singles chart with this song, which was the band’s 12th US number 1 hit. This was the last new song by The Beatles to be featured on their final tour in 1966, and was the group’s only US number one hit that was released that year. It’s marked by the boosted bass guitar sound throughout the song, and if you listen carefully, you can hear John Lennon and George Harrison singing the title of the French nursery rhyme “Frère Jacques” in several slow incantations at the beginning of the third chorus. Here is “Paperback Writer” from their live performance in Japan in 1966.
Such a great song!
