Improving Cafeteria Food

Posted by on Mon, June 25th, 2012 at 5:00 pm

Think back to your days in elementary school, middle school, and high school.  You may remember the great friends you had, the great teachers you had, or the great field trips you went on, but something tells me you won’t remember the great food.  Bad cafeteria food must be a universal thing, and 9-year-old Martha Payne from Scotland decided she couldn’t take it anymore.

I found an article on GOOD.is that explains how a young schoolgirl was fed up with meals that were not only unappetizing and non-nutritious, but were occasionally sprinkled with stray hairs that were not hers.  So, she took it upon herself to start a blog dedicated to rating the health and value of her school lunches every weekday.  Within a month, Martha Payne’s blog accumulated a global readership, as kids from as far as Taiwan and the US send in photos and descriptions of their school lunches to be shared in her blog.  ”Only two weeks after she began posting on NeverSeconds [her blog], Payne reported that her father met with the school board, which told him it was instituting some changes to the school lunch program.  One of those changes allows children to have unlimited servings of salad, fruit, and bread, which could help some children get full without having to resort to, say, the mini-pizzas or cheeseburgers also on offer” (GOOD.is).

Sometimes when you want something done right you have to take it into your own hands.  That’s exactly what Martha Payne did, and it seems to be paying off quite well for her.
