Activity from Billie Jean King

38 years ago today, 29-year-old Billie Jean King stepped onto the tennis court to take on Bobby Rigg, a retired tennis star who said that women were inferior, couldn’t take the pressure of a match with him and that at his age, he could still beat any woman out there.
At a time when the Women’s Rights movement was starting to come into its own, Billie Jean King was on the forefront, lobbying for equality in sports. It seemed that with every barrier she broke, there was another one waiting for her. When she finally played this highly publicized match against Riggs, she had a lot to prove. And prove it she did, striking a blow for women everywhere who just wanted to prove they could hang, and helping the gender equality movement take a big step forward.
