TSG’s Tips – Updating Your Browser

Posted by on Mon, April 8th, 2013 at 6:00 am

Good morning, Swaggernauts, and Happy Monday!  TSG has recently been seeing some chatter about web browsers not working properly, so I took matters into my own hands….I walked over to the product department of Swag Central and said “what is going on?”  That’s when Jonathan, who you’ve met from his Get To Know, started explaining to me how important it is to have your web browser updated in order to keep everything running smoothly and safely.  And then, he hit a crucial point.  He said, “if you want Swagbucks to work better, make sure your browser is updated.”  That’s when TSG stopped him and said, “do our users know about this, because they should!”  So, we are lucky enough to have Jonathan here to share his words of wisdom regarding updating your web browser.

Browsers are essential for our everyday web browsing, game playing, online shopping, and Facebooking. Does it matter which browser you use? How about which version?

Yes, yes and yes; it matters.

Having been a long time web user, I have used a number of different browsers over the years. I started on Internet Explorer, then made my way to Firefox, and in the recent years, I’m a die-hard Chrome user.

I recommend anyone on the web to use Chrome. It’s extremely fast, it’s secure, and it integrates nicely into your Google account (if you have one.)

Running the latest version of software helps ensure that you’re running the best software available for your application. It helps keeps things running fast, more secure, and best of all, Swagbucks.com will work better because you’re running on more modern software.

Google Chrome: Downloading and Upgrading

Install Google Chrome: http://www.google.com/chrome/
Upgrading Chrome is simple. It does it automatically. There is nothing different you need to do besides restarting the browser at least once a week. Google will streams browser updates directly to you and you will be on the latest and greatest version of Chrome.

Mozilla Firefox: Downloading and Upgrading

Install Mozilla Firefox: http://www.getfirefox.com
Upgrading is also just as simple as Google Chrome. Firefox allows for seamless self-updates and. Firefox will automatically tell you when there is an update available and you’ll need to restart the browser.

If you want to manually check for a new version, simply go to Firefox > Help > About Firefox and it will check for updates on the About screen. If there is a new version available, it will show you that it is downloading a new version and let you know when you can restart Firefox.

Still using Internet Explorer?

I know that for some people, you either are being forced to use Internet Explorer by your company or maybe you have some software that is reliant on you browsing it with Internet Explorer. Whatever the reason may be, you need to use it — or maybe you just don’t like change :)

Right now, go to Tools > About Internet Explorer. Check your version. If you see a 6…or 7 …or 8, you should update.

One of the most critical things you can to stay safer on the web is to be running the latest version of the software.

Microsoft is still preparing Internet Explorer 10, so you should at least be running Internet Explorer 9 right now.

Upgrading Internet Explorer

1) Open Windows Update by clicking the Start button , clicking All Programs, and then clicking Windows Update.

2) In the left pane, click Check for updates.

3) If any updates are found, click View available updates.

4) Make sure the Internet Explorer updates that you want are selected, and then click Install. If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

That should help keep you up to date and more secure than running an older version of Internet Explorer.

Thank you, Jonathan!  How helpful you have been!  So what are you waiting for?  Go update your browser!
