Everyone always has their own tips and tricks when it comes to getting exercise: do it with a friend, take the stairs, bike to work, get into a routine, etc. However, only about 30% of us are getting to the gym or working out with any regularity, according to Good.is. Exercise is tremendously important, because not only are we suffering from a growing obesity epidemic in this country, but exercise also help you sleep better, stress less, and feel happier. The hardest part is always finding the motivation to get up and go to the gym, but luckily, Good.is has come up with a list of ways for you to be more active without really noticing.
Stand While You Work
-Standing up requires two times the energy as sitting down, but that’s not the only reason why standing desks are gaining in popularity. Being upright may help you get ideas out, help alleviate back problems associated with long hours at the computer, and even burn fat.
Pace While You Talk
-Got a cell phone call at work? Take the conversation on the road. Not only is it polite and courteous to your co-workers, but it’s a mindless way to get your daily activity in. Pace up and down the halls of your office or take it outside and walk up and down the street. Pacing burns about 90 calories in an hour, which can certainly add up after numerous phone calls.
-Exercise doesn’t always have to be something you dread – tie it into something you enjoy doing, like going out for coffee. Make a plan with a friend whom you see frequently to always meet at a halfway point within walking distance. Having a destination helps take the boredom out of exercising.
Do two-minute exercise spurts
-For some of us, even just 20 minutes of exercise can feel like a lifetime. But how about two minutes? Set an alarm for every hour on the hour, and as soon as it goes off, do jumping jacks for a solid two minutes. If you stick to that plan between 8am and 6pm, you will have added 20 minutes of high-intensity cardio to your day, which can increase your productivity and burn an additional 200 calories.
Play music while you clean
-Doing housework can burn a lot of calories, but adding music to the mix will take it up a notch. Listening to upbeat tunes can also boost your mood and distract you from unpleasant thoughts – such as cleaning the toilet. This will help make chore time pass quicker.
Make it a date
-Turn your dinner and a movie date into an evening walk through the city, an afternoon picnic with a fun game of football, or a daytime field trip to the local ice rink. Adding a little variety to your routine will not only help to keep you moving, but it’s a great way to spice things up in a relationship.
