Swagbucks Book Club – Shhhhh, Part Two

Posted by on Fri, April 13th, 2012 at 10:00 am

Welcome to the weekly gathering of the Swagbucks Book Club.  For today’s topic I wanted to celebrate the American Library Association’s National Library Week which concludes Saturday, April 14th.

I shared with Book Club members my love affair with libraries back in this December post so you can imagine I was excited to share the news of National Library Week.  But what to write about?  We all know libraries are a treasure trove of unique books but what about the other offerings available?  I waded through several pages of very dry government statistics looking for interesting tidbits such as, “in 2009 the total visits to a public library were 1.5 billion, or 5.4 per capita”, “total circulation was 8.1 items per capita”, and “circulation of children’s material accounts for 33% of total circulation”.  These are fine statistics but boooooorring!  How as I going to convince you to visit your local library if that was all I talked about?  Then I asked myself, what are my favorite library memories?

My most favorite memory has to be when I was 5 or 6 years old and took part in my local hometown library’s summer reading program.  Each week my mother would pile me and my brothers in the green station wagon and off we would go to Taylor Memorial where we would pick out 5 books.  When we had completed our reading (or being read to, which is equally important) we would go back to the library and move our personal game pieces along a path similar to Candyland, one space for every book read, that had been set up atop the card catalog.  I don’t remember if I ever completed the game path, nor do I remember any specific books that I read during that summer but what I do remember was the family togetherness time.  It was a difficult summer that year with my dad working nights and money especially tight (I learned later) but those simple trips to the library made a big difference!  I am forever thankful for the tax dollars that kept that library open and of course to my mother who instilled in me the pleasure of reading.  (Thanks Mom!)

Do YOU have a favorite library memory? Please share it in the comments. If not, why not take this chance and make a new memory with your children this weekend at your local library.

Don’t forget we are currently reading the second book in The Hunger Games series, Catching Fire, by Suzanne Collins which we will discuss on April 27th.  You can snag Catching Fire by Suzanne Collins in the Swag Store as Kindle version; or you can put those Amazon and Barnes and Noble gift cards to good use.  Also check the Special Offers section for various book club promotions that include Swag Buck rewards.  And finally, there is always the local library that would love your support.

I have a confession, I love libraries.  When I’m visiting a new city I like to check out their library.  Yes, I know this is a little strange.  I’ve heard of people who travel to various cities to see different ballparks or even famous cemeteries,  but honestly have never run across anyone like me who […]

Ask The Swag Gal – June 15, 2011

Today’s question is one that I’ve been getting quite frequently the past few weeks.  Our users want to know how to keep the kids busy this Summer… Summer is just about here and school is just about out.  Have you figured out how you’re going to keep the kids busy during Summer vacation?  If not, […]
