Swagbucks Book Club – Remembering Gabriel Garcia Marquez

Posted by on Fri, April 18th, 2014 at 10:00 am

Welcome, Swagbucks Book Club Members.

Yesterday brought the sad news of the passing of Nobel Prize-winning novelist Gabriel Garcia Marquez – author of One Hundred Years of Solitude. According to USA Today Garcia Marquez is said to be “the most popular and perhaps the best writer in Spanish since Cervantes.” Garcia Marquez is also known for the more recent Love in the Time of Cholera which was then adapted as a film in 2007.  I have a few of his books on my “To Be Read” pile.  What is your experience with his work?

Don’t forget that next Friday (April 25) we will be discussing the April book selection: Let’s Pretend This Never Happened (A Mostly True Memoir) by Jenny Lawson. If you are not familiar with this title yet, here is a synopsis:

When Jenny Lawson was little, all she ever wanted was to fit in. That dream was cut short by her fantastically unbalanced father and a morbidly eccentric childhood. In the irreverent Let’s Pretend This Never Happened, Lawson’s long-suffering husband and sweet daughter help her uncover the surprising discovery that the most terribly human moments—the ones we want to pretend never happened—are the very same moments that make us the people we are today. For every intellectual misfit who thought they were the only ones to think the things that Lawson dares to say out loud, this is a poignant and hysterical look at the dark, disturbing, yet wonderful moments of our lives.

Please join us next week at 10am here in the Swagbucks blog – even if you don’t get a chance to read the title there is always a chance to jump in on the conversation and possibly win Swag Bucks!

Finally, Happy Easter to those celebrating on Sunday! May your Easter basket be overflowing. See you next week!

-Becky
