Swagbucks Book Club – Gone Girl

Posted by on Fri, January 11th, 2013 at 10:00 am

Welcome to the weekly meeting of the Swagbucks Book Club.  Last week we voted on what mystery should be our January book club selection.  The winner, by a slim margin, was And Then There Were None by the master Agatha Christie.  I’ve never read any of her work so I’m looking forward to this choice, and hope you are too.  We will discuss this bestseller on the last Friday of the month, January 25th at 10am Pacific Time.  You can snag a Kindle edition of And Then There Were None from the Rewards Store for just 799 Swag Bucks.  Or you can use the Amazon or Barnes & Noble Gift Cards.  Don’t forget Express Shipping is now available on both!

In keeping with the Mystery theme today I wanted to share with you a book that caught my attention and held on tight recently, Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn.  The story revolves around Nick and Amy, a jet-set couple in the in-crowd of New York City who, due to a family illness and loss of both jobs, are forced to move back to Nick’s hometown on the banks of the Mississippi.  The novel opens with Nick’s side of the story on “The Day Of”, meaning the day his wife goes missing.  But before you think this is a standard crime story the next chapter is written from Amy’s perspective.  Flynn, a former TV critic for Entertainment Weekly, deftly weaves the story  back and forth between the two main characters, mimicking their battle for control of the situation.

Just when I would think I knew what was happening the plot twists and turns, keeping it exciting and fresh.  I often found myself awake past my bedtime telling myself, “just one more chapter”.  Gone Girl is a multi-layered examination of deception raising psychological questions about who we are and do we really know our partners.  This book kept me guessing even after I had finished it, asking myself questions both about the characters and what I would have done in a similar circumstance.  Gone Girl is one of those books you hate to see end.

Do you have a book you would like to share with other Swagbucks Book Club members?  Submit a 2-4 paragraph review to and if it is featured you will be awarded 500 Swag Bucks!

Have you read Gone Girl?  What were your thoughts?
