TSG Presents: Great World Series Moments!

Posted by on Thu, October 29th, 2009 at 9:47 am

The World Series got underway last night and the Phillies, behind great performances by Cliff Lee and Chase Utley are out to a 1-0 series lead. While the Fall Classic is going on, I’ll feature Great World Series Moments from World Series past. Don’t worry if a moment I feature isn’t your favorite World Series moment, because I’ll probably get to it.

Today, I start off by going waaaayyy back. All the way back to 1932 and Game 3 of the New York Yankees vs. the Chicago Cubs. You know it’s a long way back when ‘Chicago Cubs’ and ‘World Series’ are in the same sentence. Sorry, Cubs fans.

Anyway, this game was the game of Babe Ruth’s infamous “called shot”. Legend, newspapers and one amateur video of the game has it that in the 5th inning, Cubs pitcher, Charlie Root was pitching to Babe Ruth and the Cubs bench was doing a bit of razzing to get in Ruth’s head.

Rather than just ignoring the Cubs players or talking back. Ruth started gesturing, even so much as pointing directly at the Cubs bench (this is often what the called shot is confused/disputed for). Charlie Root’s first pitch to Ruth was a strike, which caused the Cubs to lay on the heckling even more. Root’s next two pitches were balls. After Root threw a second strike, making the count 2-2, the Wrigley Field fans and Cubs players started cheering and further trying to phase Ruth. The Babe responding by allegedly pointing in the direction of Center Field. Originally Ruth himself claimed he was showing the pitcher and Cubs players that he still had one strike left. As the legend grew, so did Ruth’s story of the event.

The very next pitch Ruth deposited someplace beyond the flagpole of Wrigley Field which was in Center Field, some 440+ feet away. Not only was this homerun so awe inspiring because of the circumstances that preceded it, but the mammoth shot it was only add to the story. Ruth did some heckling and trash talking of his own as he rounded the bases and made no effort to endear himself to Chicago fans.

What some forget is that Lou Gehrig homered right after Ruth in that inning, ousting Root from the game. The Yankees would go on to win the game 7-5 and ultimately the Series but the moment everyone remembers from the 1932 World Series is The Babe’s called shot.

A truly great World Series moment.
