Today’s question comes to us from Swaggernaut undefinable1:
I was just wondering… do you procrastinate in writing your “Ask the Swag Gal” blog? Ever? Really… be honest! I’m having a hard time with procrastination and am currently procrastinating on writing a lab report (due tomorrow) and an exam (for tomorrow). I find I’m on Swagbucks a lot.. and waiting for swagcodes a lot too. I was wondering what steps I could take to be more focused on priorities I really don’t want to be doing. Thanks for the help!
Thanks for the question, undefinable1 (great name by the way!). I’ve credited your account with 15 Swag Bucks.
Procrastination has a way of controlling your life, doesn’t it? It’s hard to believe that 60% of the population procrastinates. Yes, even I am procrastinating, the deadline is approaching as I write this!
With work, school, and your daily life, even the smallest tasks can become overwhelming. The important thing is to be aware that you are procrastinating and take small, but concrete actions to counter it.
I have put together a small list of exercises you can do to help get the ball rolling.
-Try to to determine when you are most active. Is it early morning or late at night?
-Focus for 15 minutes, the hardest part is overcoming procrastination. Set an alarm and when it goes off do something you enjoy (e.g. Swag Code Hunts!). You will be surprised at how 15 minutes turns into 30 minutes and so on.
-Use your calendar, whether it’s your Email or Phone, use it! Set priorities and alarms. You will be amazed how much you get done when the alarms are buzzing!
-Give yourself credit, when credit is due. Don’t wait till the end to pat yourself on the back.
-When all else fails bribe yourself. This can be anything from going to a movie or buying that outfit you have had your eye on for months.
Just remember there is no law that says you have to finish everything at once. Take a break and enjoy your time working on it. I know, it seems impossible to do, but give it a try. Good luck on the report and exam, and remember, “Never put off till tomorrow what you can do today”.
Swaggernauts be sure not to procrastinate and send your questions to firstname.lastname@example.org. If we select your question, you’ll earn 15 Swag Bucks!
