Saturday Do-It-Yourself: DIY Water Coolers!

Posted by on Sat, July 26th, 2014 at 11:00 am

Happy Weekend! We hope you’re enjoying your Saturday. This week we have a really fun and cool DIY submission, from ameade924, of Midlothian VA!

DIY Water Coolers!

What you’ll need:

  • A personal sized water cooler(I used 2 quart)
  • White(or whatever color you want) spray primer for use on plastic
  • Fine sandpaper
  • Painter’s tape
  • Acrylic paint(suitable for plastic)
  • Adhesive pearls
  • Spray clear polyurethane
  • Modge podge
  • Small fine tip paint brush
  • Sponge tip paint brush

Directions:

  1. I used a very fine sandpaper to sand the plastic. This will remove the sheen to make paint stick better.
  2. Tape around the top where you don’t want paint to stay.
  3. Prime the cooler by following the directions on the paint. Make sure you use multiple coats(I did three)
  4. Tape around what you want to stay white and paint with acrylic paint. Let dry and add more coats until you get the color you want. You may want to skip this step and do the entire cooler with chevron. I painted the bottom half teal because of the ridges in the cooler.
  5. Tape off your chevron print. I did this step by eye but you may want to measure your tape out and draw the design with a pencil first. Next add a circle/square for your monogram(I used a round post-it note to tape of the space.
  6. Paint over the entire cooler.
  7. Add more coats until you get a solid color.
  8. When it is dry, carefully peel off the tape and the post-it note.
  9. With a pencil, trace or free-hand your monogram.
  10. With a small paint brush, paint over the pencil lines with multiple coats until you can no longer see the pencil.
  11. Paint over the entire cooler with modge podge to seal the paint.(I did two coats)
  12. Once the modge podge is dry, stick on the pearl stickers wherever you want them.
  13. Spray the whole cooler with clear polyurethane according to the directions on the can. Use 3 or 4 coats to make the cooler weather resistant and to prevent the paint from chipping. It also gives the cooler a pretty shine!
  14. And there you have it! A finished water cooler to use at soccer, crew, the beach or wherever you want it!

This is an amazing DIY project! It would be awesome if a Swaggernaut made one with the SB logo!

If you would like to submit a DIY or a favorite recipe please send it (with your Swag Name and a picture, please) to contests@swagbucks.com.  If we publish your submission you will get 500 Swag Bucks!

Have a great weekend!
